Is There Anything Antioxidant Rich Foods Can't Fix?
Of course there are. They can't fix everything , but when you start to get a better idea of what Free Radicals really are, you start to wonder. If you've already made it to the page on Cherries And Gout and the Flavonoids page, you've probably started to understand the importance of the foods we eat. We're going to get deeper into which antioxidant rich foods are good for keeping your Gout at bay but for now let's get a better idea of those different food groups and what an "Antioxidant" really is.
Our foods come from different plant and animal sources. Some of the antioxidant rich food groups we need to start to get a handle on are:
- Fruits
- Vegetables
- Dried Fruits
- Legumes
- Nuts and Seeds
- Cereals
- Spices
So why is the Antioxidant content of those foods so important? Here is my simplified version of what an Antioxidant is:- "Plants are made up of cells, cells are made up of molecules, molecules are made up of atoms, atoms are made up of protons and electrons.
An Antioxidant is an atom that has an extra electron to donate to a Free Radical. This is a simple way to describe how to prevent and repair Oxidative Damage."
Without trying to teach a science class and spiraling down into a bottomless pit of technical jargon (that I don't understand), let's move on to get a better understanding of what a Free Radical is and it will make more sense why antioxidants are so helpful. (please click on the link) But . . . why to do we need to donate an electron anyway? How did we lose the first one? And what does that have to do with Gout? . . . Inflammation.
