Let's Take A Closer Look At
Gout Medications

There are a number of commonly prescribed gout medications and some very good reasons for taking them . . . and it's also a good idea to look at what they are, how they work, what the side effects are, and what you could be doing differently with your life to avoid having to take them.

Let's go down the list.


First and foremost of all the gout medications is Allopurinol. Once again, with a little Google-ing around you can verify for yourself that Allopurinol helps prevent the release of "Xanthine Oxidase" and helps block the production of uric acid.

Really cool huh?

Wouldn't it be better to eat a lot of high antioxidant foods and skip the gout medications?

Anyway . . .

. . . what about the side effects of allopurinol? Usually it's tolerated well by most people but skin rashes are the most common side effect.

However . . . there are a few very serious ones:

-"Allpurinol Hypersensitivity Syndrome" has a few characteristics: mouth sores, widespread rash, fever, liver inflammation, reduced kidney function and more.

-"Vasculitis" is inflammation of blood vessels.

-"Aplastic Anemia" is when the bone marrow fails to produce blood cells.

-"Hepatitis" is inflammation of the liver.

Let's move on to Cochicine. Colchicine Gout Treatment is used to reduce the swelling and inflammation that come along with severe gout attacks but it does not reduce uric acid levels.

It's proven to help reduce the chance of future gout attacks and is often used for people who don't do well with NSAIDs. (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)

. . . and the most common side effects are: vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea.

On the more serious side is bone marrow problems and muscle inflammation. Also it is used carefully on people with reduced kidney function.

Here's the rest of the list for the common gout medications. If you've let yourself get so out of whack, use one of these we've talked about on this page. -"Probalan" is a uricosuric agent and lowers uric acid levels . . . and has side effects.

-"Elitek" is also know as Rasburicase and it increases the rate at which uric acid in broken down in the body . . . and is used more commonly in cancer treatment and has serious side effects and needs to be monitored meticulously.

-"Indomethacin" is a NSAID that works by reducing the hormones that cause inflammation . . . AND has some super nasty side effects and REALLY has to be taken carefully.

-"Triglide" is Fenofibrate and lowers high cholesterol and high triglycerides. It is used as part of a treatment to bring gout under control . . . and has to be taken carefully and has serious side effects. (Sheeeesh)

-"Prednisone" is a steroid that prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation . . . and can weaken your immune system and make it easier for you to get infections or have your infections get easily worse . . . stay away from this nasty crap.

-"Gengraf" is Cyclosporine . . . I'm worn out talking about all these severe drugs. Don't ever let yourself get so screwed up you have to take this one. It's used to prevent rejection after an organ transplant and is used for severe Rheumatoid Arthritis. It will lower your immune system response and has a long list of nasty side effects and must be administered by a doctor very carefully.

There are too many other drugs that can be added to the list of gout medications but the purpose of this page is to have you take a closer look at how extreme these drugs can be and move you in the direction of managing your gout in a more natural way.
