The Seven Effective Habits For Gout . . . Let's All Thank Stephen Covey

My adaptation: "The Seven Effective Habits For Gout", was obviously inspired by the work of Stephen Covey; "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People". I'll do my best to honor him.

Through out my website, I make a lot of references to Habits because my own poor habits and choices lead me to a long and painful struggle with Gout.

What role have your habits played in your experience with Gout?

Maybe this will be helpful to both of us.

The Seven Effective Habits For Gout

Habit #1 - Be Proactive.

Take Responsibility for your condition; we all have the "ability to respond" moment to moment, and make different decisions and choices.

For example; turn off the TV and get more sleep, leave earlier for work and avoid the stress of traffic, have the salad instead of the fries, have one beer not two. Be Proactive about preventing Gout.

Habit #2 - Begin With The End In Mind

Here's an image that will make it stick: You're going to a funeral. Feeling the sadness and loss, you walk up to the casket for a last Good Bye and guess who's in there? You.

How did you live your last 10 or 15 years? All twisted up and sickly with Gout? Or alive and vital and you just one night sparked out peacefully? Gout is just a wake-up call for what's ahead.

Habit #3 - Put First Things First

Take an inventory of your Time Spent . . . write it down. How much time is spent of Growing Your Health? Focus time on "growing" in every area of your life.

Setting and Committing to a plan to "grow your health" (better food, more exercise, lot's of sleep) will pay off in all the other areas of your life . . . relationships, finances, and probably less Gout Attacks.

Habit #4 - Think Win/Win

? . . . what does that have to do with Gout? Easy; you win . . . in Mind and Body. Better Physical Health promotes better Mental Health.

I'll make it easy to wrap your mind around it; would it make you "happy" to have less and less Gout Attacks? I rest my case. How "happy" would you be to avoid the Heart Disease and Diabetes waiting up the road for you?

Habit #5 - Seek First To Understand

When it comes to Gout, there are two perspectives and both are valid:

  • Take synthetic drugs and do the things you've always done
  • OR
  • make a conscious choice to exchange health promoting habits for the non-health promoting habits that led you to Gout.

It's always all about Choices . . . what's yours?

Habit #6 - Synergy

Working Together. The fact that you're here reading this now is already setting the right energy in motion. You're doing something positive in the direction of improving your health condition.

Send someone else here to my website and now "you and I" are working together. Who knows what kind of difference we can make.

Habit #7 - Sharpen The Saw

Or . . . Recharge. Stop and listen to what's going on in your head, stop and feel what's going on in your body. Then make a plan.

Make it ding on you phone or whatever you have to do, but stop for one minute everyday; make it quiet, listen and feel and breathe.

Its' not just what you eat and drink . . . it's The Way You Live Your Life.

The Seven Effective Habits For Gout is my attempt to make an impression that Gout, like everything else in our individual lives, is a result of the Choices we've made.

Here are 5 important pages you can apply The Seven Effective Habits For Gout to:

  • Paying attention to the way we're Eating is the obvious place to start, but also . . .
  • paying attention to what we're eating when we're Eating Out shouldn't be over-looked either.
  • Due to limitations for whatever reason, fluid and gentle Movement is not only helpful but necessary.
  • And you won't only hear it here, getting a steady program of consistent Exercise is also what your doctor keeps saying too.
  • And finally; Sleep. Get organized, sleep a lot.

I would like to finish by saying "Thank You". As I've said in other places on my site, the act of researching and writing all of this is causing my "health to grow" and creating The Seven Habits For Gout is another brick in the wall.
