The Dreaded Tophus . . .
What you are about to see may not be suitable for children or people with a weak stomach. Tophus, (tophi is plural) is not only gross to look at but it represents very advanced cases of gout. Tophaceous Gout is the clinical term for chronic gout that has gone unattended for an extended period of time. Whatever.
Just have a look at this and it will scare the hell out of you. The really bad news is that if you have this, (which I've had before and I only have one kidney) this is the same stuff kidney stones are made of!
Obviously I picked the absolute most graphic photos I could find for maximum impact . . . how did I do?Most of the time this occurs in more elderly people but, hey, I had 3 surgeries by the time I was 47!
Tophi looks kind of like cottage cheese under your skin. It has a tendency to become wrapped around or entwined with the tendons and will cause them to "calcify". Before my surgeries I couldn't bend either one of my little fingers.
I had one that looked about like this only it was on the tip of my thumb on my right hand.
Pretty sick, huh? Is this enough to get you to change your wicked ways?
Yours truly . . . showing off the non-functioning little finger of my right hand . . . compliments of tophaceous gout. To give a little background to this, I'd gone off my meds and was trying out the Atkins Diet. I'm a lot smarter now.
